SOC 318 Movies and Sports Week 5 Final Paper

Our society has historically and still to this day dealt with a multitude of issues that profoundly divide cultures, institutions, organizations and more importantly people. Sports can instantly be placed in this category when matters related to segregation, race and ethnicity are interrelated. I have selected the movie “Remember the Titans” to discuss the impacts of the aforesaid as they pertain to sports throughout this paper. In 2000, Remember the Titans was an American sports drama motion picture centered upon legendary African American football coach Herman Boone who was portrayed by mega-star Denzel Washington. (Wikipedia, 2015) This movie was not only one of the best-selling and entertaining movies of its year, but offered audiences a comprehensive representation of communal actions and conducts in the lives of people similar to themselves. I will dissect Remember the Titans via credible arguments (realistic conflict theory), various social approaches (cultural theory) and the fundamentals of racial discrimination (racism).(Coakley, 2014)

Realistic conflict theory “is a social psychological model of intergroup conflict.”(Baumeister & Vohs, 2007)“it illustrates how intergroup conflict can arise as a result of conflicting goals and competition over limited resources, and it also offers an explanation for the feelings of prejudice and discrimination toward the outgroup that accompany the intergroup hostility.”(Sidanius & Pratto, 1999) This type of conflict simply advises that struggles amidst two or more dissimilar oppositions will implode as these entities fight for like or similar reduced assets. Social or cultural theory is the division of proportional anthropology that looks to identify the investigative approach of culture in active or logical relations. Racism is intellectually defined as the “belief that humans are subdivided into distinct groups that are different in their social behavior and innate capacities and that can be ranked as superior or inferior.” (Newman, 2012) To further explain, I see it as being an excessive thought process that races have significant traits and innate aspects and that a particular race is better than another. Additionally I will observe the lives of African American coaches, players and fans during this era of our national history.

The 1970’s was a period of ethnical struggles for human rights, global turmoil and societal mayhem.
