According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2015), cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of deaths in the United States, equating to about 1 in every 4 deaths, even though CVD is largely preventable. What are some conditions and causes of cardiovascular disease? What is the financial and societal impact of CVD within the United States?

Despite CVD being largely preventable and the amount of effort that has been placed on educational awareness, it still is a leading cause of deaths. Recently, various studies have shown promise with stem cell therapy treating heart disease. Research stem cell therapy in the treatment of heart disease and the possible promises it has as a therapy. Should science and health care pursue this a treatment option for heart disease? Why or why not? What obstacles and issues would it have to overcome to become a common treatment for heart disease? BSC2347 Week 3 Discussion: Hypercholesterolemia and Statins

High cholesterol levels in the blood (hypercholesterolemia) is associated with various cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. What is the danger and complications of atherosclerosis? What other cardiovascular diseases can hypercholesterolemia lead to the development of? How does hypercholesterolemia develop?

A common treatment for hypercholesterolemia is a class of drugs called statins. Are statins the best course of treatment for hypercholesterolemia in adults? Why or why not? Should they be prescribed to adults with hypercholesterolemia with no evidence of heart disease? Should teenagers be prescribed statins if they are diagnosed with hypercholesterolemia? Why or why not? Is there a better solution for these situations?

BSC2347 Week 4 Discussion: Vaccine Opt-Out?

There have been some outbreaks of certain diseases, such as measles, in recent years. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2013), “Measles was declared eliminated from the United States in 2000”, but in 2013 there was the second largest cases of measles in the U.S. since that point. The vast majority of these individuals were not vaccinated with the Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine.

Research the CDC’s recommended vaccine schedule for infants and children, the reasons why parents decide not to vaccinate their children, the research on vaccines and long-term complications/side effects, along with the recent disease outbreaks.

Should parents have an opt-out option regarding childhood vaccinations? Why or why not? If a child doesn’t get vaccinated, do they pose a risk to public safety? Should they be allowed to attend public schools if they are not vaccinated?


BSC2347 Week 5 Discussion: Smoking Restrictions

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2013), it is estimated that 42.1 million people in the United States smoke cigarettes. Research the effects smoking and secondhand smoke has on an adult’s, on a child’s, and on an unborn fetus’s respiratory system and health.

A few states have implemented laws that make it illegal to smoke in the car when there is a child within the car. Should this become a federal law where it is enforced in all states? What about making it illegal for a pregnant mother to smoke? Or parents smoking in a house with children, should this be illegal too? How far should lawmakers go with the creation of anti-smoking laws for the protection of the unborn, infants and children to an individual’s personal freedom?

BSC2347 Week 6 Discussion: GM Foods

There is a growing trend in the United States for food companies to have their foods be verified to contain no GM (genetically modified) products or ingredients due to consumer demand. Research the use of GM foods and plants within our food supply, including their pros and cons, primary use and any possible health issues related to them. Are there advantages to the use of GM foods? Is there justifiable fear to consuming GM foods/ingredients within our diets or are consumers overreacting? Why or why not? Are organic foods more nutritious and safer compared to GM foods? Why or why not? After your research, will you change your dietary and food purchasing choices?

The number of individuals waiting for an organ transplant completely dwarfs the number of donor organs available. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2014), 18 people die each day waiting for an organ and over 120,000 people are waiting for an organ transplant.

Research organ donation and explain how the U.S could reduce these statistics and get more individuals to sign up for organ donation. What would it take for you to donate one of your kidneys to a family member? How about a stranger? Would you? What are your overall fears and concerns?

BSC2347 Week 8 Discussion: Energy Drinks and Kids

The intake of various energy drinks, such as Redbull®, Monster Energy Drink®, and Rockstar®, has dramatically increased in recent years with children, teenagers, and young adults. These energy drinks have been linked to illnesses and even deaths in certain cases.

Research the effects these energy drinks have on the body and the complications associated with them. A lot of these drinks contain various vitamins and electrolytes among other ingredients. Can these energy drinks influence the overall electrolyte and acid-base balance of the body? Why or why not? Should these drinks have a warning label on them? Should it be illegal to sell them to anyone under the age of 16? Elaborate on your opinions.

The topic and discussion of birth control has been reignited due to the Affordable Health Care Act (ObamaCare) passage. Research the concept and various methods/techniques of birth control. Also research statistical data on teen pregnancies across the United States and within your state. Are you surprised by the teen pregnancy rates within the United States and your state? Why or why not?

Should birth control products be free to anyone who wants to use it? Should birth control products, such as condoms, birth control pills and patches, be readily available for teenagers without a parent’s knowledge or consent? Why or why not? If so, at what age? Justify your reasoning and opinions with your research.

BSC2347 Week 10 Discussion: End of Life Care

End of life care and treatment is a sensitive subject to discuss but must be addressed by our health care field and society due to the exorbitant costs it has on the health care system, especially Medicare, which is a public health insurance. According to “The Dartmouth Institute” (2013), Medicare spending per patient, in the last two years of life went from $60,694 in 2007 to $69,947 in 2010. On top of that, it is estimated that one-quarter of all Medicare payments are for end of life care and treatment, which is about $50 billion with the majority of costs being paid out for the last two months of the patients’ care and treatments.

There have been ethical calls to limit the amount of payment Medicare will provide to extend a patient’s life for another six to twelve months. Should there be a financial limit for Medicare in these situations? Why or why not, and if so, what should it be? Should money be diverted from end of life care and treatment for seniors and be used on infant and childhood care? Will an advance health care directive (otherwise known as a living will) resolve this problem? Why or why not?
