Week 6 | Part 6: Finalizing the Plan

I have considered various options for my nursing specialty, including a close look at my selected (or currently preferred) specialty and second-preferred specialty. I have also developed a justification of my selected (or preferred) specialty. Lastly, I have examined one professional organization related to my selected or preferred specialty and considered how I can become a member of this organization.

The results of my efforts are below.

Directions: Complete Step 1 by writing 2-3 paragraphs in the space below comparing the nursing specialty you have selected – or the one you prefer if your choice is still under consideration to your second preference. Identify each specialty and describe the focus and the role that graduates are prepared for. Identify any other differentiators you feel are significant, especially those that helped or may help you reach a decision.

Before comparing nursing specialties. I would like to state that Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner is my chosen specialty for 15 years ago. A Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse at a mid-level practitioner. NPs are trained to assess patient needs, order diagnostic test, diagnose disease, formulate and prescribe treatment plans. They are trained to cover basic disease prevention, coordinate care and promote health. For less complex condition. According to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. NPs are educated at the graduate level to provide primary, acute, chronic and specialty care to patients of all ages, depending on their field of practice. (American Nurses Association. (2013). Step1: Comparison of nursing specialties.

My first specialty of choice is Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner. There is a great need of care provider in the elderly’s community, institution and hospital. Yet once again, US remain in a critical shortage of healthcare professional in the health field. In the Gerontology Nurse Practitioners class, I will learn to assess, diagnose, prescribe labs diagnostics and medication. I would have clinical practice practicum in community settings with different populations, such as adults, children, women and advance settings. Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioners have tremendous job openings providing care from adolescent to elderlies. When I graduate from the GNP program. I would take the GNP state board and credentialing to obtain the license to practice.

My second choice would be family Nurse Practitioner because this field allow the Nurse Practitioners to practice as a Gerontology Nurse Practitioner, but their practice is from newborn babies. FNP program focuses more on evidence-based practices that can increase the quality of care of patients. If graduate from that program, I would take the FNP state board and credentialing to obtain the license to practice.

To conclude, regardless the choice, patient care remains priority for all ages and population. Nurse Practitioners must take a Board exam successfully for credentialing. If I had chosen to be a Family Nurse Practitioner, I could still Practice in my focus field. However, as a nurse Entrepreneur primary focus is not small children. The population I provide home care services, is mostly senior clients. I would like to continue with that group mostly but not limited to older kids and young adults. So, my first choice remains to pursue an Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner degree because it is just what I like and socially it will promote a change in knowledge and financially.
