One concern when using descriptive statistics, such as mean, median and mode, is that it is possible to mislead people, either accidentally or on purpose. Do you think this concern is reasonable? Explain your reasoning. What is an example of using statistics to mislead? As a user of statistics, how could you prevent yourself from being misled? HS 311 Descriptive Statistic Analysis Discussion

Mean, median, and mode are a very easy and quick way to describe statistics for a certain set of data. they can find the average or the exact middle number of a data set. Although they are simple to find a good way to interpret data, I do agree that they can be misleading. I think the biggest way it can be misleading is because sometimes only looking at the average isn’t telling the whole truth. The average or the middle number can make something look way less severe than it really may be. Say you are looking at data for an illness, you can find the average amount of people dying from that illness to see your chances. That average may be misleading if most of the people dying are between ages 50-70 and you are 65. In that case, you will most likely have a higher chance than that average of all people with the illness. I think it is important to make sure that you really understand the data you are looking at to be more accurate. I think that is the biggest way to make sure you aren’t misleading your own self. Do your research on whatever it is and don’t just let one number be the number you pay attention to.

Hello Everyone,

Let me first start off by stating what statistics means, statistics is collecting and analyzing numerical data in any field that uses number to present the results. One concern when using descriptive statistics is that the information can be misleading. I believe that there is a lot of formation that is being broadcasted through media that is very misleading to the people. A lot of the information that is used to describe certain issues I don’t understand if its being used a scare tactic or being used as false perception of reality. Statistic is often used to mislead so that companies can gain profit from misrepresenting the truth. An example of a statistic that is misleading right now is Covid-19. It is a fairly new disease with flu like symptoms and no known cure and the only way to “preventing” it is washing your hands and covering your face. Covid-19 has been an pandemic since early last year it has and it is still on the rise especially in large states. Conducting intense research on certain statistics such as Covid-19, Cancer and AIDs is a way from not being misled on certain statistic. However I still believe that is controversial as well because the information that is out is information of the companies or individual that did the research and that’s the information that they wanted for you to see or know about. The truth about the misleading facts will never be known.
