Quality and Safety Management

In order to evaluate the current state of health care and make effective and important improvements in patient quality and safety, it is critical to identify meaningful performance measures. It is important that these measures can be applied in the same way in similar health care institutions, wherever they are. As noted in your course text, there are three types of performance measures used to evaluate health care: structure, process, and outcome. In this discussion, you create and evaluate effective measures and apply them to the case study you identified in Week 1.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review the Learning Resources, specifically Chapters 3 and 4 in your Course Text, Introduction to Healthcare Quality Management, to find examples related to performance measures and how to present the data collected.

Post a brief description of three different performance measures you would create (one each for structure, process, and outcome) that could be applied to the case study you identified in Week 1. Then, indicate the types of data you would need to collect to support the measures and how you would analyze and present that data. Finally, identify improvements you expect might result from your analysis.

Support your work with specific citations from this week’s Learning Resources and/or additional sources, as appropriate. Your citations must be in APA format.

Quality and Safety Assessments In order for any business to evaluate and improve its performance, it must have clear, measurable outcomes to use for assessment. Similarly, in order to effectively compare the performances of institutions performing the same service within an industry, the same outcomes must be used for assessment. These are often called performance measures and provide a way to compare different companies against one another when they are working toward the same goals. In health care, assessments are particularly important for both the individual patient (consumer) and the institution (provider). This week, you consider and create effective performance measures to improve health care and patient safety outcomes. You apply them to the case study you identified in Week 1.
