Grand Canyon University NY State Kindergarten Learning Standards Worksheet
Children’s literature encompasses a variety of genres, from picture books to poetry to fantasy to non-fiction. Analyzing and selecting the appropriate genre and literature can be challenging. Appropriate genres should be selected based on the grade level, as well as the students’ academic readiness. At each grade level, the teacher determines appropriate literature that addresses young children’s characteristics including strengths, interests, and needs to develop literacy skills.

For this assignment, create a literature-based lesson that focuses on one genre of children’s literature. Refer to the information you gathered in Topic 1 for the “Using the Reciprocal Process” assignment. Select one genre and a work of literature in that genre on which to focus in a lesson to meet the standards for reading, writing, listening and speaking you selected.
Using the “COE Lesson Plan Template,” develop a lesson plan that addresses the standards. Do not complete the Multiple Means of Expression (assessment) portion of the lesson plan template. You will complete this in Topic 3.
In addition, include developmentally appropriate technology that would enhance your lesson plan.
Under the “COE Lesson Plan Template,” write a 100-250 word rationale addressing your reasons for selecting both the genre and the particular literature used as part of the lesson.
- How does this particular literature and genre selection encourage enjoyment and foster a positive attitude toward literacy?
- How does the genre and literature appeal to students’ strengths, interests, and needs?
Support your writing with 2-3 resources.
