    Leadership and Management: A Personal Perspective

    In every field of life, organizations work with certain resources. These resources include finances, raw material, technology, buildings, vehicles, and human resources. Resources can provide successful results when managed effectively and efficiently. These resources are managed by managers and leaders in every organization whether it is the private sector or the public sector. Management is the process of administering and organizing all resources to achieve the required results. Management is often divided into sub-steps with hierarchies as top management, middle-level management, and lower-level management. Scope and limitations of every level vary from each other.

    Furthermore, leadership is the process of influencing followers to do a certain task or pursue a particular field to achieve the required results which are beneficial for all. Management is through virtue of position and organization structural whereas the leadership is not confined by limitation of designation or position. Every individual has some managerial and leadership qualities, but there is also some limitation based on one’s personality and external environment. Some people are better suited as leaders, others as managers (Northouse, 2018).

    Leadership Role and Analysis of Strengths and Areas of Growth

    Leadership is the ability to influence others into doing something which they would not otherwise do. To persuade people to have trust in you and your vision to lead them from the front. Leadership is not only a skill trait, but it is also a relationship of trust where followers have complete trust in their leadership to guide them in the right direction. The influence of the leader comes from his/ her ability to connect with followers. I believe that I have leadership traits in me, which are more built-in my personality and upbringing. There are three distinctions of leadership qualities, including administrative, interpersonal and conceptual. My areas of strength are problem-solving, creating the vision and strategic planning for the conceptual model of leadership. The interpersonal approach to leadership, have quite socially perceptive and has not only emotional intelligence but also can manage interpersonal conflicts among followers. I can manage resources and people quite effectively for an administrative approach to leadership. My main areas of growth are developing technical competence as one cannot lead its followers without having an intellectual and skilled superiority over them. Also, one cannot create visions about growth in the future if there is no clear understanding of skills. That is why I believe that there is a lot of room for growth and improvement in technical skill development.

    Management Role and Analysis of Strengths and Areas of Growth

    Management is the process of managing resources of an organization most effectively and efficiently to achieve the required results. The management role comes from designation and position granted by the hierarchal structure of the organization. Management is not influence based on one’s ability based on his intelligence, confidence, or charisma. It originates from the power granted by organizational structure and position under this structure. Managers have less influence but more power due to the set system in any organization. I believe that if one has some leadership abilities, he or she can become an effective manager. It is because of the reason that if one can convince their followers to do something without having official power, that person can effectively influence the followers/ subordinates to do their task once he/ she has the official designation and power. Hence, I believe that I can play an effective management role. My core areas of strength come from my ability to manage resources and people. I can create strategies and can involve my team with me in our work and make them feel empowered. I can also manage the resources by reducing waste and increasing the output.

    Furthermore, I can work well under stress and ensure that goals are met. My areas of strength are my determination and the ability to get along with people and analyze the situation and create customized strategies suitable for every individual situation. Like everyone, I also need to keep on growing and expand my resources on advanced skills. My key domain of growth will be managing conflicts among employees and ensure that the work environment does not become too political and segregated.

    Area of Growth:

    Every leader and manager needs to keep on working on their skills and abilities to play their role effectively. Leadership roles are divided into three distinctions of administration, interpersonal, and conceptual roles. Under these three headings, there are numerous sub-headings, and every leader must try to develop all these skills. Analysis of my leadership role shows that I have a strong grip over the conceptual and interpersonal model of leadership by having emotional intelligence, perceptive social clarity, management of interpersonal conflict, problem resolution, strategic planning and having a clear vision. But there is scope for growth in the administrative side of leadership: management of resources and people is adequate but technical skills need to improve a great deal. In management, the growth areas include learning new technologies and employing them to increase the productivity of employees (Lauffer, 2011).

    Significant External Factors to Influence Leadership or Motivation in Social Work

    Leadership and management do not exist in a vacuum. They need an assistive environment to function properly. This environment constitutes of both internal and external environment. The external environment consists of micro and macro factors. Some significant external factors are changing public perception about how social work functions, and it should function through descriptive and normative approaches. It is also influenced by the opinions of key stakeholders of employees, clients, and policymakers. These factors are not insignificant as they have huge implications (both positive and negative) on the way social work is perceived. The opinions of these stakeholders are contributed by social changes in society by changes in the social acceptability of certain things, change in views, progressivism and new values motivated by political and economic changes. Hence it can be deduced that social work is influenced by the external factors originating from social values and these values also transpire in the leadership and management approach.
