SAMPLE INTRODUCTORY APPROACH

A knowledge worker is an individual who works with information and generates information and knowledge as a product (McGonigle, D. and Mastrian, K. 2017).
Clinical nurse leaders (CNL) design, implement, and evaluate client care by coordinating, delegating and supervising the care provided by the healthcare team at the clinical level (GraduateNursingEdu. 2019).
Clinical nurse leaders utilize evidence-based practice to ensure that patients receive the best possible care by making full use of the latest innovations in healthcare, and participating in the interdisciplinary team (GraduateNursingEdu. 2019).
The CNL works at the point of care, focusing on care coordination, outcomes measurements, transitions of care, interprofessional communication & team leadership, risk assessment, implementation of best practices based on evidence, and quality improvement (AACN. 2019).

Nursing Informatics

Traditionally defined as a nursing specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science (McGonigle, D. and Mastrian, K. 2017).
Its purpose is to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice (McGonigle, D. and Mastrian, K. 2017).
Data can be obtained from many sources, then it is processed into information, and then knowledge (R2 Library & American Nurses Association. 2015).
The rising utilization of information and communication technologies (ICTs), specifically electronic health record (EHR), is compelling nurse leaders to consider several things, including the ways in which nursing practice will transform, innovative ways to convert knowledge and evidence to direct patient care, and the generation of new understandings about nurses’ contributions to clinical outcomes (Nagle LM, & Yetman L. 2009).

Scenario

Patient X is presenting with pallor, diaphoresis, tachycardia, and a weak pulse.
The nurse checks Patient X’s digital health record to find the patients most recent hemoglobin and hematocrit laboratory results.
The nurse also checks to see if the patients lab values are on a downward trend.
If there was no lab work completed within the previous 24 hours, the MD would order STAT blood work.
The MD would order the lab work via the electronic medical record system in order for the laboratory to run the diagnostic test
The electronic medical record would then notify the nurse of the STAT order, after which the nurse would draw the patients blood and submit it to the lab.
The lab would run the diagnostics and the results would appear in the patient’s electronic medical record. The electronic medical record would also signal to the nurse that the patient’s lab values are out of the normal parameters. If the results are critically low, which is expected for Patient X, the lab may also give a courtesy call. …
