SAMPLE SOLUTION APPROACH –
The Impact of Standardized Nursing Terminology
Introduction
With the beginning of the use of technology in the healthcare system and especially when the development of health record started in the form of electronic health record it is now necessary for the nurses to learn to develop new skills in themselves. One of the skill set the nurses need to develop is the development of standardized nursing terminologies. These terminologies have many benefits it does not just used to develop to enhance and improve the ease of use with technologies but it also give access to huge amounts of information and data for analysis and compilation (Tastan et al., 2014). It is necessary and very important for healthcare nurses to know and understand what standardized nursing terminologies are, what is the rationale for the use of these technologies and what are the challenges and benefits that may be faced by using them.
Importance of Standardized Nursing Terminologies
Before educating the nurses about the importance of standardized nursing terminologies it is important to first make them understand what it actually is. Nurses first need to know the definition of standardized nursing terminologies as through this way they can understand why it is important and the use of it in modern world related to provide care to the patients. To simplify this term standardized nursing terminologies it can be defined as the common language used between the providers (Oreofe, & Oyenike, 2018). It can be defined as the common language that interprets the information of clinical nursing into the understandable form of data. Due to the standard language the access to huge amount of quality nursing data can be easy to access for research, analysis and creation of evidence-based care models. To understand this definition one can start thinking about its implementation and understand that how it can be utilize and how utilizing a standard nursing terminology can benefit patient care. By American Nurses Association there are three types of terminologies that are currently recognized that improves information mining and interoperability which are interface terminologies, minimum data sets and reference terminologies. The benefits of these terminology is that it helps in enhancing and improving interoperability, improve the quality of patient care and help in the collection of big data for research.
Benefits
One of the major benefit is that it has the ability to aggregate the huge amount of nursing data and information, through big data sets analysis and implement the changes to evidenced-based systems which in result improves the quality patient care. There are many other benefits which includes structuring clinical nursing practice data in the electronic health record, improving evidenced-based practices based on clinical data of nursing and validating the efficacy of quality nursing care.
Barriers
The barriers in implementing standardized nursing terminologies divided into four categories and these are practice, research, knowledge and policy/resources. The most important one in the nursing is the knowledge barrier as there is a lack of education and training in the nursing schools related to informatics. Due to ignoring this opportunity for education results in the fundamental lack of knowledge and understanding of the used and concepts of standardized nursing terminology. According to (Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, 2017) there are many other problems also noted such as incomplete nursing data, electronic health records that are customized to individual organizations and lack of standardized assessment forms or tools. These are problems and issues which makes it more difficult to collate data into useful information for use in research, to cross information to outside systems and to improve the quality care.
Conclusion
As found out and noted that the use and implementation of standardized nursing terminologies can help in improving the quality care for patients. It is important for nurses to become more familiar with the definition of these standardized terminologies and the benefits that can be implemented to the care provided to patients across the board. By teaching the basics of standardized nursing terminologies in nursing school the understanding about it can be improved. It is very important to have the strong foundation in informatics as it will improve the understanding of nurses about the process of data collection and how standard terminology will allow for interoperability. The final result being improved quality patient care.

MODULE 4
Discussion: Healthcare Information Technology Trends
Throughout history, technological advancements have appeared for one purpose before finding applications elsewhere that lead to spikes in its usage and development. The internet, for example, was originally developed to share research before becoming a staple of work and entertainment. But technology—new and repurposed—will undoubtedly continue to be a driver of healthcare information. Informaticists often stay tuned to trends to monitor what the next new technology will be or how the next new idea for applying existing technology can benefit outcomes.
In this Discussion, you will reflect on your healthcare organization’s use of technology and offer a technology trend you observe in your environment.
To Prepare:
- Reflect on the Resources related to digital information tools and technologies.
- Consider your healthcare organization’s use of healthcare technologies to manage and distribute information.
- Reflect on current and potential future trends, such as use of social media and mobile applications/telehealth, Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled asset tracking, or expert systems/artificial intelligence, and how they may impact nursing practice and healthcare delivery.
By Day 3 of Week 6
Post a brief description of general healthcare technology trends, particularly related to data/information you have observed in use in your healthcare organization or nursing practice. Describe any potential challenges or risks that may be inherent in the technologies associated with these trends you described. Then, describe at least one potential benefit and one potential risk associated with data safety, legislation, and patient care for the technologies you described. Next, explain which healthcare technology trends you believe are most promising for impacting healthcare technology in nursing practice and explain why. Describe whether this promise will contribute to improvements in patient care outcomes, efficiencies, or data management. Be specific and provide examples.
By Day 6 of Week 6
Respond to at least two of your colleagues* on two different days, offering additional/alternative ideas regarding opportunities and risks related to the observations shared.
Assignment: Literature Review: The Use of Clinical Systems to Improve Outcomes and Efficiencies
New technology—and the application of existing technology—only appears in healthcare settings after careful and significant research. The stakes are high, and new clinical systems need to offer evidence of positive impact on outcomes or efficiencies.
Nurse informaticists and healthcare leaders formulate clinical system strategies. As these strategies are often based on technology trends, informaticists and others have then benefited from consulting existing research to inform their thinking.
In this Assignment, you will review existing research focused on the application of clinical systems. After reviewing, you will summarize your findings.
To Prepare:
- Review the Resources and reflect on the impact of clinical systems on outcomes and efficiencies within the context of nursing practice and healthcare delivery.
- Conduct a search for recent (within the last 5 years) research focused on the application of clinical systems. The research should provide evidence to support the use of one type of clinical system to improve outcomes and/or efficiencies, such as “the use of personal health records or portals to support patients newly diagnosed with diabetes.”
- Identify and select 5 peer-reviewed articles from your research.
The Assignment: (4-5 pages)
In a 4- to 5-page paper, synthesize the peer-reviewed research you reviewed. Be sure to address the following:
- Identify the 5 peer-reviewed articles you reviewed, citing each in APA format.
- Summarize each study, explaining the improvement to outcomes, efficiencies, and lessons learned from the application of the clinical system each peer-reviewed article described. Be specific and provide examples.

MODULE 5
Discussion: The Inclusion of Nurses in the Systems Development Life Cycle
In the media introduction to this module, it was suggested that you as a nurse have an important role in the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC). With a focus on patient care and outcomes, nurses may not always see themselves as contributors to the development of new systems. However, as you may have observed in your own experience, exclusion of nurse contributions when implementing systems can have dire consequences.
In this Discussion, you will consider the role you might play in systems development and the ramifications of not being an active participant in systems development.
To Prepare:
- Review the steps of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) as presented in the Resources.
- Reflect on your own healthcare organization and consider any steps your healthcare organization goes through when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system.
- Consider what a nurse might contribute to decisions made at each stage of the SDLC when planning for new health information technology.
By Day 3 of Week 9
Post a description of what you believe to be the consequences of a healthcare organization not involving nurses in each stage of the SDLC when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system. Provide specific examples of potential issues at each stage of the SDLC and explain how the inclusion of nurses may help address these issues. Then, explain whether you had any input in the selection and planning of new health information technology systems in your nursing practice or healthcare organization and explain potential impacts of being included or not in the decision-making process. Be specific and provide examples.
By Day 6 of Week 9
Respond to at least two of your colleagues* on two different days, by offering additional thoughts regarding the examples shared, SDLC-related issues, and ideas on how the inclusion of nurses might have impacted the example described by your colleagues.
