For this Assignment, you will compute and interpret reliability estimates for personality measures based on the OCEAN model of personality. OCEAN is an acronym that stands for five personality traits: openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. Your analysis will focus on the items that comprise each of the five OCEAN measures, as well as the impact of the reliability on measures of central tendency (means) and variability (standard deviation). From the analyses and prior readings on items and response options, you will look for possible problems in the items making up the measures.

To prepare for this Assignment:

  • Read the article, “The Big Five Personality Dimensions and Job Performance: A Meta-Analysis” to familiarize yourself with the Five-Factor Model (FFM) of personality, here termed the OCEAN model of personality.
  • Review the Learning Resources that pertain to reliability and revisit this week’s Discussion. Focus on the definitions and applications of internal consistency, split half reliability, interclass correlation, and test-retest reliability.
  • Read the assigned pages in the SPSS Instructions on how to conduct, interpret, and display reliability analyses. You can find the instructions in this week’s Learning Resources. If you have not already done so, please install SPSS on your computer. You can find links to SPSS in the left navigation area of the classroom. Using SPSS and the OCEAN data file in the Learning Resources, conduct an analysis of internal consistency reliability (coefficient alpha), spilt half, interclass correlation, and test-retest reliability of the five OCEAN measures in the data file.
  • Use the table from the SPSS Instructions to properly organize, format, and present your reliability analysis.

BY DAY 7

Submit a 1-page summary (not including references) of your analyses (do NOT copy and paste tables from SPSS). Include the following in your analysis:

  • A table that shows:
    • Item level analyses (mean, standard deviation) for each of the five OCEAN measures
    • The internal consistency reliability estimate of each of the five OCEAN Measures (coefficient alpha)
    • The average interclass correlation (ICC) estimate of reliability for the five OCEAN Measures
    • The split-half reliability estimate for the OCEAN measures
    • The test-retest reliability estimate of each of the five OCEAN measures (correlation)
  • Below the table, address the following:
    • Interpret the reliability measures (i.e., Are they good, bad, or unclear?).
    • Identify any items that appear problematic and explain why they may be problematic.
